Aston Villa Old Stars were so named when first formed by the late and great Aston Villa winger Leslie Smith in 1960 and are probably the longest established former players team in the world. However, an Aston Villa team of former players was playing as far back as the 1880's. The modern day Aston Villa Old Stars have played around twenty five fundraising matches in every one of what is now 42 consecutive years. In the process they have helped to raise well over 1.5 million pounds for charitable causes and that they are without doubt the leading former players team in theUK.
All of the players that play for the old stars have played at the highest level and many have achieved the highest honours in the game. The players do not recieve any reimbursement at all for their participation in fundraising football matches or any other of the other fundraising events that happen throughout the year. Other activities include golfing events, dog racing, tournaments, guest dinner speeches and many more.
